Community Service with GCHS

In addition to our volunteer program, the Gulf Coast Humane Society offers opportunities for individuals to fulfill community service requirements while making a positive impact on the lives of animals.

GCHS proudly supports students who are completing required service hours. Opportunities are available both on-site and off-site:

    • Lee County Students: If you need service hours and would prefer to volunteer off-site, please email Melissa@gulfcoasthumanesociety.org for available opportunities. Volunteer Orientation is not required for off-site service hours.
    • FGCU Students: If you are fulfilling service-learning requirements and prefer to complete hours off-site, please email Melissa@gulfcoasthumanesociety.org for guidance. Volunteer Orientation is not required for off-site service-learning hours.

We also accept court-ordered community service applicants who are 18 years or older. Volunteer Orientation is not required for these opportunities. To begin the process, please contact Melissa@gulfcoasthumanesociety.org. Please note that we are unable to accept applications from anyone with a felony record, or with current or prior charges related to Domestic Violence, Battery, or Animal Cruelty, as well as those with a history of violating county or state animal ordinances.

These community service programs allow individuals to give back to both the community and the animals who need them most, while also supporting the lifesaving mission of GCHS.

Students have several ways to earn volunteer service hours outside of the shelter while still making a big impact:

    • Creating Enrichment Items
Make DIY toys, treats, or comfort items that provide stimulation and enrichment for cats and dogs in our care.
    • Hosting a Donation Drive
Collect essential supplies such as food, litter, towels, toys, and cleaning products to support the daily needs of our shelter animals.

If you have court-ordered community service, your first step is to meet with the Volunteer Coordinator to review requirements and complete your sign-up.
Once approved, community service workers may complete hours seven days a week during regular business hours.
